I am an artist living and working in Bristol, UK and more recently in Portugal and Brazil. My artistic interests are in landscape and documentary painting and photography.
I use photographs in my painting and look for paintings in the landscape when I take photographs. I am interested in the idiosyncrasies of history and place and the familiarity with somewhere that makes it a part of you. The paintings on the site represent a selection of work.
My favourite painters are Alice Neel and Liao Xiaodong, my favourite photographers are John Gutmann and Janine Wiedel. I also take inspiration from popular music with its constant mixing and reshaping of different forms and styles and its mutual respect for all comers.
Janine Weidel took some photographs of chainmaking workshops in the Black Country in the 1970’s. One of them was called Bazillai Hingley and Sons, founded sometime in the early 19th century and still in existence today. Barzillai Hingley was one of my great, great, grandfathers and that’s how I came by the work of Janine Weidel, looking for family history.
The pieces on the blog are notices, links to other sites and reflections on people and places I have come across. Several seem to revolve around a visit to a gallery or two. I am always interested in the context of an exhibition, social, cultural, geographic. It seems to say a lot about the work exhibited and goes a way to explaining its meaning.
